The non-profit organization Awamaki helps women artisans in the Andean region in Peru to start and run their own businesses, investing in training to develop skills and leadership, and providing them market access for their hand-made products. Working closely with local artisans cooperatives the organisation uses market strategies to promote the weavers’ work, empowering women and enabling them to lead their communities out of poverty.
Peru was heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and Awamaki’s women artisans have been significantly affected by the crisis with most families in the region facing serious food insecurity as they rely on tourism to sell their craft. For this reason, the organisation launched a GoFundMe campaign to help minimize the impact of the pandemic, supporting the artisans and ensuring food and economic security for the female artisans and their families.
