The Organisation Caritas-Austria Adapted their Free Learning Support Program “Learncafés” to Keep Helping the Children even During the Pandemic

The Lerncafés (learning café) is a free program aiming to support children and young people aged from 6 to 15 years facing any learning challenge to thrive in school through free tutoring. The program helps children from refugee families, asylum seekers or migrant families, or any children facing difficulties to have access to free study support, in order to enhance their language skills, succeed in school as well as participate in afternoon activities. The program counts w more than 940 volunteers and supported more than 2,100 children.

However, in view of the restrictive measures taken by the Austrian federal government to contain the spread of the virus, the Lerncafés had to close its locations temporarily. The situation is aggravated by the fact that because of the closing of many schools, learning is even more challenging n and children are more in need of support than ever. The tutors adapted with creativity and commitment to keep the mentoring and try to support the children digitally, whether fixed learning appointments by telephone, video conferences, or e-mail exchange motivating them. This approach also helps the children to overcome learning hurdles accentuated by the pandemic.
