The Power of 10 Initiative feeds families and kids in vulnerable communities

Since the beginning of COVID-19, many restaurant staff have lost their jobs. At the same time, low-income families and school children are facing additional challenges of food insecurity. In Washington DC, United States, a chef and restaurateur, Erik Bruner-Yang founded the “Power of 10” initiative to help alleviate both problems. The initiative re-employs restaurant workers. At the same time, Bruner-Yang and his staff prepare and distribute meals to essential employees and families facing a food shortage.

Together with the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and the non-profit organisation No Kid Hungry, the Power of 10 initiative delivers healthy meals and nutrition education materials to some of DC’s most vulnerable families. Over the course of 10 weeks of pilot testing, food insecurity among participating families has decreased from 75% to 21%.
