School nutrition staff gets creative to feed hungry kids in Maryland, United States

A large number of children in low-income families in the United States get their main meals in school. Due to school closures, many school children lost their only consistent source of meals. School nutrition staff nationwide met the challenge by trying out creative ways to feed kids and prepare meals for pick-up.

Among many creative ideas, the nutrition staff in Charles County, Maryland, hosted “theme days” to make meal pick-up fun for the participants. So far, they have hosted Pirate Day, Ninja Day, Disney Tea Party, Unicorn Day, and even an “All the Holidays in One Day.” For Halloween, they had a “Trunk or Treat” theme, where all staff dressed up and handed out Halloween candy in addition to nutritious meals for kids at their decorated cars. The theme days have increased participation and brought joy to many families and children during this difficult time.
