RUSSIAN ORGANISATION NUZHNA POMOSHCH LAUNCHES A FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN CALLED “SAVING THOSE WHO ARE SAVING US” TO FUND CORONAVIRUS EFFORTS
The Russian Foundation Nuzhna Pomoshch (Need Help) has launched an initiative called “Save those who save us” to support non-profit organizations struggling with a lack of funding. Charitable foundations were among the first victims of the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The outbreak of the pandemic was followed by an unprecedented economic crisis that profoundly impacted the fundraising capacity of the non-profits as the charitable foundations in Russia recorded a decrease in donations. They are forced to close programs, cut aid, and lay off employees. At the same time, the demand for and the burden on charitable organizations is growing because there are more and more people become in need of help. According to its director, Mitya Aleshkovskiy, without a major joint effort, the pandemic will lead Russia not only to a “great depression” but also to a “serious social disaster.” The campaign started on April 1 with the support of Russian celebrities and civil society leaders. By April 6, individual donors have already signed up for 2.5 million rubles’ worth of monthly donations (around US $35,000) to support 216 charities.
