No Food Waste: eliminating hunger, one person at a time
In Hyderabad, India, the non-profit organization “No Food Waste” is serving over 5,000 meals to the poor every day. This is twice as many meals than what No Food Waste distributed before the lockdown. The mission of the organization is to solve the hunger problem in India by recovering excess untouched food and reducing food waste.
To date, with the help of volunteers and donations, the organization has fed more than a million people. They not only distribute food but also ration kits for families who cannot afford to buy fresh ingredients for cooking, water, masks, medical kits, sanitizers, and hygiene products.
No Food Waste also made a mobile app that is called the same name (the “No Food Waste” app) that allows the organization to identify “hunger spots” in India and take requests for donations of excess or leftover food through the communities and volunteers. Anyone can use this app to pinpoint a place as a hunger spot. The No Food Waste team then verifies it and updates the hunger spot database. So far, this app has identified 80 hunger spots in Delhi.
