Mães da Favela Assists with Monetary Distributions and Connecting to the Internet
Mães da Favela (Mothers in the Favela) is a partner organization of CUFA (Central Única das Favelas – Unified Center of the Favelas), a Brazilian organization that operates in the political, social, sports, and cultural spheres of life in the favelas. The organization caters to approximately 500 Brazilian favelas, and it unfolds into two main projects:
The first is the creation of a monthly voucher of R$120 to supplement the income of mothers who live in the favelas during the pandemic. They are also distributing food parcels and hygiene supplies to impoverished families.
The second project, Mães da Favela ON, aims to democratize access to the internet and digital technologies, by providing tools for the favelas to resume their activities, overcoming the digital isolation that the pandemic has placed upon them. It was launched on September 24, 2020 and so far, it is the largest favela-focused connectivity project ever undertaken in Brazil. Through the installation of wi-fi hotspots and sim card distribution, the project promises to bring connectivity to millions of families across Brazil.
