European Organisation Launched the COVID-19 Disability Rights Monitor

Validity, an international non-governmental organisation based both in the UK and in Hungary, launched in 2020 the COVID-19 Disability Rights Monitor in order to conduct rapid independent monitoring of state measures concerning persons with disabilities, particularly during the pandemic. The organisation was established in 2002 as legal advocacy to tackle the isolation, segregation, and exclusion among generations faced by people with disabilities. The organisation provides specialist legal support to the disability rights movements in Europe and Africa with the goal to promote equality, inclusion, and justice for all.

In the face of the pandemic outbreak, several threats were added to the lives of people with disabilities, especially those in residential care. The emergency measures taken by States to stop the spread of the virus may increase the risks that the human rights of these people are violated. The initiative is a coalition of six disability rights organisations and is a major international monitoring initiative.

The initiative is being implemented by a Coordinating Group comprised of leading worldwide disability rights organisations working closely with their networks to build a comprehensive global picture of the situation of people living with disabilities.
