Brazilian Indigenous Movement Develop a Roadmap to Tackle the Impact of the Pandemic on Indigenous People in the Amazon Region
Indigenous peoples are amongst the most vulnerable and most affected groups during the COVID-19 crisis in Brazil. The majority of this population already face enormous violations of their rights on a daily basis, and with the spread of the pandemic in the region, the critical situation is getting worse, leaving them deprived of the conditions to face the lethal disease and threatening the preservation of memory and traditions of whole populations due to the death of elderly indigenous leaders.
Considering the fact that 50% of the indigenous population directly affected by the pandemic and more than 52,000 individuals infected by the virus and more than 1,000 deaths, the movement Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil – APIB (Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil), together with grassroots and other civil society organisations, launched an international mobilization plan to help alleviate the situation.
The movement elaborated a thorough report about the various violations and the risks the native population is facing during this unprecedented health crisis. The report provides general guidelines with actions at local and regional levels to be implemented by the organisations (APIB associated or partners) executing the proposals. The actions are meant to be implemented in a cooperative manner through the national territory aiming to strengthen and enhance network actions.
