Actions to Protect Women and Girls from Violence During the COVID-19 Pandemic
The Centre for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW) in Kenya is a women-led feminist organization whose vision is to enable women and girls to enjoy full rights and dignity and to expand their abilities to exercise their rights and social justice.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and as a result of gender-based violence aggravated by the closure of and limited access to gender-based violence (GBV) services, CREAW continued to look for innovative ways to address the challenge of violence against women and girls during the pandemic through interventions that are centered around GBV prevention and response and accountability for GBV service delivery.
Some of the strategies that have been used include the provision of psychosocial and legal support to women and girls facing violence during and beyond COVID19, as well as mass media and digital messaging to sensitize communities on how they can respond and prevent violence against women and girls.
CREAW also works with community activists in different parts of the country to refer and document cases of GBV and develop partnerships with women networks/groups across the county lines to support survivors and to help tackle the spread of COVID19 and advocate for effective GBV service delivery at the county and national levels among others.
