Ação da Cidadania Ending Issues of Hunger
Ação da Cidadania contra a Fome, a Miséria e pela Vida (Citizenship Action Against Hunger, Misery and for Life) is a Brazilian NGO founded by sociologist Herbert de Souza. In 1993, he launched the Citizenship Action program, aiming to mobilize all segments of Brazilian society in the search for solutions to the issues of hunger and misery. Since 1993, Citizenship Action has been working to encourage citizen participation in the construction and improvement of social public policies and it is one of the most prominent organizations in Brazil when it comes to combating hunger.
The movement organized through regional committees (each Brazilian state has its own committee), which promote joint actions integrated by the national coordinating office, based in Rio de Janeiro. Local committees work with families, providing them with assistance, and mobilizing communities in the plight for the achievement of social rights. Mostly composed of volunteers, the committees promote their own projects in the most diverse areas, such as health, education, arts and culture, and organizing food donations.
The NGO is currently collecting donations to provide food for those most affected by the economic crisis resulting from the pandemic. To date, more than 400 tons of food have been distributed to impoverished families across the country.
